What's really bothering me is that people who had NO idea of the content of the speech castigated it long in advance. They'd never read it, had seen no advanced copies, nothing - they make what I call a "leap of intellect" without the intellect. That's happening more and more, and it's polarizing us more and more. People are rushing to judgment without checking the facts; people aren't looking for knowledge, they prefer to make quick assumptions instead. PR is going through sweeping changes...and I think you are right that PR professionals are much more aware of this fact than are other senior executives at this point. One suggestion I have for communications teams is to do 'war gaming' exercises with a variety of examples of various positive and negative communications scenarios and detail out how they would operate and react to those situations.
