Freedom of the Press

“But the president went a lot further than that. He said that the ‘fake media,’ not certain stories, the ‘fake media,’ are an enemy to the country. We don’t have a state-run media in this country. That’s what they have in dictatorships,” Wallace continued.

Our free and independent press here in the United States is under attack. Far from being an enemy of the people, the press serves as a separate, critical check on the government at all levels of our society, and upon corruption and wrong-doing in society in general. There are many more functions, as the first article below shows.

The press is rightfully called the Fourth Estate.  The other three, of course, are the Legislative branch, the Judicial Branch and the Executive branch of the government, formed so that no one branch has sole power without the balancing powers of the others.

While the media has had its share of problems in the last few decades – most notably the blurring of the line between news and entertainment – we are still blessed with certain investigative reporters and insightful columnists who present the facts and perspectives that are so needed today.

This page will provide a collection of recent articles and columns about freedom of the press in our country.
